Basil herb is native to India and has been cultivated for over 5000 years. It is also considered sacred in Hindu Religion and Hindus offer prayer to the Basil plant also known as “Tulsi” plant.
Let us discuss some benefits of basil leaves.
Used for General Cooking
We can use dried basil leaves in cooking any dish. We can add basil leaves in salad. Basil leaves are used around the world in many different cuisines. Basil leaves add depth and flavour in any dish.
Volatile oils like Eugenol, Citral, Linalool, Terpineol, etc present in basil leaves can block the enzyme in our body known as cyclooxygenase (COX). Basil juice is used in many anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen and aspirin that inhibits the cyclooxygenase enzymes.
Relieves Fever and Common Cold
Juice of basil is used for quenching fever, especially those related to malaria and other infections. The juice of basil leaves is effective in bringing down high temperatures. Tender tulsi leaves boiled in water acts as a preventive measure against malaria and dengue fever. Incase of acute fever, decoction of the leaves boiled with cardamom powder in half a litre of water mixed with sugar and milk brings down high temperature. Basil can restrict the growth of various bacterias like Staphylococcus Aureus, Listeria Monocytogenes, Yersinia Enterocolitica, Eschorichia Coli 0:157:H7 and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa. Essential oil of basil is effective in stopping growth of pathogenic bacteria.
Boil basil leaves in half a quarter water, cooking until half the liquid remains. Take a couple of teaspoons an hour with water to relieve your pain and swelling. You can also make a paste of basil leaves along with some sandalwood powder and apply on your forehead to relieve headache and provide coolness in general. Tension and tight muscles are the main cause of headache and basil helps the muscles to relax.
